Fun fact: Cheetahs only attack prey that runs

jesus that is good to know.

Yup, that’s the point you just stay still and let it do whatever the fuck it wants that doesn’t involved you getting eaten.

REALLY FUN FACT for big cats cheetahs are fucking docile as shit

my grandfather ran a cheetah sanctuary in south africa and he’d just lie with them and sleep among them and they’d rub against him and chirp at him they’re big fucking babies

pkmnbreederbrianna  pkmnbreederbrianna

Another Fun Fact: Cheetahs are incredibly nervous animals. One of the (many) reason’s they’re going extinct is that cheetahs are so sensitive and nervous, some of them are literally too nervous to breed. Others will breed, but stress themselves out so much, they’ll lose their cubs.

So zoos with breeding programs had to figure out how to make cheetahs comfortable enough to first of all, get laid and secondly - not spazz themselves into miscarrying.

So what’d they do?
They gave the cheetah’s their very own Service Dogs!

The dogs make them feel safe, protected and secure!

the anxiety cat

kittyplayz1cantmsg4somereason  kittyplayz1cantmsg4somereason

Also! Cheetahs are not in fact classified as big cats, they are simply very large lesser cats, due to the fact that they purr, meow, chirp, and cannot roar. Also many cheetahs have learned to recognize wildlife photographers are friends and not foes, so they will just come up to people and be friendly occasionally as pictured at the top of the chain. Some will even leave their Cubs with photographers to look after while they hunt. So. Yeah. Cheetahs are great

bunjywunjy  bunjywunjy

this works because cheetahs are actually fairly social animals, and they look to members of their group for context on how worried they should be about any given Situation. but since cheetahs are also nervous social animals, they can work each other into an anxiety spiral pretty easily over things like “being in an enclosed habitat” and “there’s a guy over there”.

so by introducing a dog as a member of the group, the cheetahs will now look to the dog for context clues on how worried they should be! and the dog Is Not Worried At All, Thanks, so the cheetahs think everything must be chill even if they were personally unsure about it, and they stop being so freaked out about literally everything.

I’ve been thinking a lot about bodies and strength and power and how we look vs. how we feel and what it means to love yourself so here’s a little piece about that. Thanks to my crew on Patreon for making this work possible.

Reblogging this five years later to remind myself that strength is a practice and it comes and goes. Sometimes strength is a visible attribute, and sometimes it’s as simple as looking in the mirror and acknowledging that I’m still here.

Taylor Swift has reportedly withheld negotiations with streamers, for her ERAS TOUR concert movie, until the SAG strike gets resolved.

Swift earlier bypassed studios to release her film in theaters, after receiving a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.

I miss when library books used to have little paper pockets inside with a list of all the people who borrowed it and when... I hate that this is now exclusive knowledge of librarians. I do care that a miss Mariana borrowed this book in 1985 and then Dario in 1997. They're my brothers and sisters

elasticitymudflap  elasticitymudflap

but really, there's a million reasons why it's an issue for users and staff of the public library to have immediate access to a record of who has borrowed a specific item and when.

and that's not even about keeping the information "privileged" to the library staff, these days they don't even keep a digital record of an item's history of borrowers; once you return a book, there isn't a list of everyone thats ever taken that book out that your name gets added to (though they probably take a tally of how many times it is checked out for circulation statistics).

i think the card system is a remnant of a culture that could only exist in the world before the internet as it exists today, where this identifying kind of information wasn't always readily at your fingertips, even for those at the "information professional" level.

don't get me wrong here, i do understand the nostalgia factor to it as being part of a different time, but i think it's always important to understand why this kind of system has its flaws and has been (at least in north america) taken out of practice

umjammertammy  umjammertammy

bear in mind that US public libraries spent most of the past twenty years fighting off lawsuits that they were prohibited from disclosing to the public because when 9/11 happened the federal government wanted a list of every person who read certain books and the librarians had a really bad feeling about where that kind of policy would end up going, for some reason.

not keeping the records in the first place is a way for the libraries to protect themselves when they stand up for your privacy.

Today's the anniversary of when we released "Whitney's Big Umbrella" (a show that looks like it's for kids but is definitely not, in fact, for kids.) Someday we'll sell and make an entire TV series of it, full of puppets and songs and nihilism, but in the meanwhile enjoy this joyous musical blasphemy!

You know, I used to believe that the leftist… fixation, shall we say, on Israel/Palestine was in good faith. Like, I figured the reason they talked about it so much was because they saw Israel’s lopsided military power, and how they were using it (to commit war crimes), and were rightfully horrified. It descended into antisemitism for them at times, not because they truly hated Israelis or Jews, but because they had bad rhetorical habits built into them and just didn’t realize. So of course, I was of the very firm belief that in the event of an attack like the one on Israel, leftists would condemn it as horrific, since their problem wasn’t Israelis themselves, but how Israel was perpetuating the conflict with their disproportionate military power and committing human rights violations. I truly believed they would never cheer on those doing the same to Israeli civilians—because the war crimes were their problem, not the Jews.

And, um, yeah. I was wrong.

spacelazarwolf  spacelazarwolf

yeah i think a lot of people are very ignorant and just repeat what they hear, or they’re afraid of backlash from their peers, but there are absolutely leftists who just straight up fucking hate jews and intentionally use israel as an outlet for that hatred. and unfortunately those are the ones who are the loudest, so they are the ones who are having their words repeated by people who are ignorant, and they are the ones people are afraid of backlash from. being a jewish leftist has been absolutely miserable this past week. and it was already pretty fucking miserable.

notebeans-galaxy  notebeans-galaxy

image

a lot of leftists have this idea about ‘the revolution’ in their heads and toppling the state or the bourgeoisie or whatever material conditions or people in power their particular brand of leftism characterizes as the enemy, and that group sometimes ends up being ever expanding to include anyone who doesn’t believe the exact same things they do, anyone who isn’t just like them. it’s poorly disguised tribalism, and in this case it’s also working with preexisting antisemitic bias.

and once a person sees someone as the enemy - Israelis, including civilians, including anti-zionist Israelis and children - they stop seeing them as human. after that point, nothing’s off limits.

captain-acab  captain-acab

This is why historically, so many revolutions end up being just as bloody and repressive than the regimes they toppled. It happened in France, it happened in Russia, and it’s really disheartening to see self-described “revolutionary leftists” fail to even passingly consider that maybe, just maybe, if a successful “Revolution” is their goal, they should study history and try to not repeat its very obvious and predictable mistakes???

So many big leftist and anarchist blogs have revealed themselves in the last week to just be run-of-the-mill reactionaries cosplaying la revolución.

And the way they project their violent fantasies onto Middle East countries with which they have no personal connection really highlights the unexamined imperialism underlying all their beliefs.

saltedweather  saltedweather

I try to have sympathy for people whose families or lives are in danger and who are lashing out. But those are not, as far as I can tell, the people who say civilians lives don’t matter if they’re Israeli. The people saying that are for the most part Americans without anyone dear to them in the line of fire.

And it’s so frustrating because the rhetoric on the right about Palestinian civilians is also horrifying and dehumanizing, but I’m genuinely afraid to ally with supporters in the US, because I know so many of them are not drawing a line between “an end to apartheid and genocide of Palestinians” and “the beginning of apartheid and genocide of Israelis.”

And these are the folks with “restorative justice” and “end the death penalty” in their bios half the damn time - but apparently, that only applies to their own countrymen, not people they can other without risking their own hides.

ETA:

there’s a difference between “it is valid to use violence against oppressors” and “any violence committed by oppressed people is justified.”

This is a really, really, really important point. Re: the conversation in the notes, I’m specifically frustrated that people are acting as though the Hamas attack on the concert and so on can somehow be considered the understandable outrage of people with no peaceful alternatives. Two really serious issues with that: One, it misses the context that there’s evidence the far right party in Israel, Likud, believes in supporting Hamas (to ensure they never have to deal with a government the rest of the world would support), AND the Israeli government pulled defense forces away from that area before the attacks, leaving them vulnerable. This attack was not a spontaneous response to political repression, and Hamas is not on the side of the Palestinian people. Two, I am absolutely certain that many of the lives Hamas uses for its attacks are young, and being exploited for this horrifying violence and political purpose, just like soldiers in every conflict the world has ever seen. That does not make their actions acceptable. Have they, much like young IDF conscripts, been manipulated? Yes. Does that somehow justify violence against non-combatants? Absolutely not, in either case.

I am once again pondering the fact that Marty McFly is just such a fantastic character. Like, especially when you look at other male protagonists in the 80s, they all follow a similar trend. A lot are uber cool and suave, with the added side effect of also being a jerk. Many are popular jocks or whatever. Big flirts. Edgy and troubled or sleazy, etc.

And Marty is sort of in his own category entirely. He's cool, but he's not? He skateboards and kills it on guitar but has 2 whole friends--his girlfriend and a disgraced scientist--and crippling self-doubt and can't go a day without falling down or tripping over his own feet or nearly being killed by a car.

He's polite. He's respectful. Won't let anyone mess with the people he loves and doesn't let a moment pass by where he can thank somebody or apologize for a wrongdoing. (seriously, Marty has beautiful manners. Like, it is quite noticeable how often he says, "please," "thank you," "excuse me," or "sorry".)

His emotions are all SO BIG and he doesn't hold back on them. He gets all animated when he's excited and yells when he's scared and cries when he's sad and pulls his friend into big ol' hugs.

He literally never knows what is going on. Marty exists in the constant state of confusion. Between asking Doc to "wait a minute" every other sentence and his ever-changing, scattered thoughts, Marty is just out there trying to survive. Just slow it down, alright? He's a smart guy, but he's also got elevator music playing in his head. Really really fast elevator music.

Time means nothing to him. His watch is broken. He's racking up tardies like it's nobody's business. Stopping by the garage to look for Doc and play some guitar when he should be at school. He's got to get out of that stupid suit RIGHT THIS INSTANT even though he's got one shot at the lightning strike at the clock tower.

Marty just. Does things. There is zero impulse control. A synapse fires and Marty's brain goes "!!!" and that's that. Punch the bully who's twice your size, buy that sports almanac, just Walk Away while Doc is talking to you. Buy that sweet leather jacket. Ignore ALL instructions you're given! Marty, you need constant supervision and I love you for that.

He's just. Marty is the most character. Look at him.
